ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Residents in an Orange County neighborhood are getting impatient for answers as to when officials will do something about a stinky landfill.
They said it’s been more than a month since officials promised to fix the issue.
Residents sat in on a meeting about the landfill Wednesday.
“I can’t speak for the other neighborhoods, but I know that since the last time we spoke, I haven’t smelled anything in the air from the landfill,” said resident Davis Payne.
Payne and his neighbors are on pins and needles to see of the remediation efforts are enough to kill the stink for good.
“Usually the smell would kind of waft into the area (after the rain). And that hasn’t happened today,” said Payne.
Months ago, landfill management decided that rain was part of the problem.
“Our position is, we’re not stopping until the neighbors stop complaining about the odor,” said landfill manager Jim Becker.
He said the outside research firm hired for $62,000 has found that the county was already on track.
The downside to that discovery is that his department has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the fight already, and putting a long term plan into play could easily cost much more.
“I would be much more pleased if we didn’t have any more odors at all,” Becker said.
The outside consultants are presenting their findings at the meeting.
They’ll be back in a few more weeks with the official odor management plan.
