Seminole County considers nearly 11 percent tax increase

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Seminole County leaders will hear from the public Tuesday night on a proposal for the county to increase the overall millage rate by nearly 11 percent.

Officials told Channel 9's Jeff Levkulich that it would help balance the budget.

The current 2016/2017 millage rate is 4.8751 for the county. The rolled back millage is 4.5991, and the proposed millage for the 2017/2018 year is 4.8751, a six percent increase, according to the county.

The fire rescue millage rate sits at 2.3299 and the rolled back millage rate is 2.1984, but the proposed rate for 2017/2018 jumps to 2.7649, a nearly 26 percent increase.

The county levies a dependent special district millage for the operation of a municipal services taxing unit for the provision of fire and emergency medical services, which covers the unincorporated and the incorporated limits of Altamonte Springs, Casselberry and Winter Springs, county officials said.

The public hearing is 7 p.m. Tuesday at 1101 East 1st Street, Sanford, FL 32771.
