SANFORD, Fla. — A Sanford police officer has resigned amid an internal investigation in which he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her home.
Officer James Blake denies the assault, but admitted he turned off his body camera during an encounter with her.
Documents said Blake aside from turning off his body camera, he violated two other policies by visiting the woman’s home while off-duty and using a state database to look up her personal information.
He submitted his resignation letter in September after 10 years on the job. He wrote that he left with his head held high and that he served his community well and with distinction.
The investigation started when a woman contacted Sanford police in April claiming she was sexually assaulted.
The State Attorney’s Office didn’t find enough proof to file any charges.
But internal investigators concluded the allegations came come a woman Blake met on the job last December when her pickup truck broke down.
Investigators discovered that Blake ran the woman’s information through the police database for unofficial business.
Three months later, investigators went on to find that same woman requested Blake to return to her home after a mental breakdown.
Investigators noted Blake turned off his body camera while on the call.
They said he returned to the home a second time and engaged in a sexual act.
After the woman claimed it was an assault, Blake was relieved of duties in April pending the investigation before resigning in September.
Police have not said if Blake was getting paid between April and September.
