Residents on edge after Christmas Day break-in at Mount Dora home

MOUNT DORA, Fla. — Residents of a Mount Dora neighborhood said they’re on edge after a burglary at a home on Christmas day.

"That kind of freaks me out, (and) makes me want to make sure my doors are locked," resident Gabriel Sargent said.

People who live in and around Camp Avenue in Mount Dora are on edge after word spread about a break-in in a neighboring home on Christmas night.

Police said the homeowner returned to find four men inside his home stealing his belongings.

Mount Dora police said the homeowner grabbed his gun and opened fire.

The culprits ran away.

Police said they are not sure if the homeowner shot any of the men before they escaped.

Some neighbors said they saw the police activity but didn’t know what was going on.

"Last night, there was a little bit of an influx," Sargent said.

Police and Lake County deputies were called out to the scene, but they were unable to find the men, who still remain at large.

"We're at this time of the season where people get desperate and looking for money, looking for a way to pick up some easy cash," resident David Koczan said.

The homeowner was not hurt.

"You've got to stay vigilante and look out," Koczan said.
