Residents demand action after drivers keep crashing into their homes

EUSTIS, Fla. — Some Lake County residents said more needs to be done to keep drivers from crashing into their homes.

People who live along State Road 19 and Grove Street in Eustis told Channel 9's Mike Manzoni that they stay awake at night wondering when another vehicle will plow through their homes.

Deborah Sherman said cars have hit her home on three separate occasions in the last year. A palm tree stopped an SUV from going into her bedroom Thursday night, Sherman said. In a second crash, a tree was uprooted and a chain-link fence was broken, and a third time, a truck crashed into her bathroom.

“It’s so scary. I can no longer sleep in this bedroom,” Sherman said.

Another homeowner has a similar story.

“When they went through the house, I was sleeping on the couch inside,” Sage said.

The speed limit along State Road 19 is 30 mph, but resident Charmaine Childrey said most drivers don’t care and drive faster.

"It's just heart-throbbing. We're all just sick of it,” Childrey said.

A spokesperson with the Florida Department of Transportation told Eyewitness News on Friday afternoon that within the past six months they've spoken with people who live in the area about that curve.
