ORLANDO, Fla. — An 11-year-old boy who was injured Monday afternoon when he was struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle was reunited with his parents early Tuesday, the Orlando Police Department said.
The collision happened shortly before 5:45 p.m. near South Parramore Avenue and Piedmont Street, Orlando police Sgt. Wanda Miglio said.
The boy, who wasn’t identified, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment. His condition wasn’t released.
Police didn’t know who the boy was and asked the public’s help locating his parents.
It took more than six hours for officers to find the boy’s parents, investigators said.
Police said the boy’s grandfather watched a report about the crash on the evening news and then alerted the boy’s father.
Officers haven’t said why it took so long to find the boy’s parents, but Miglio said Florida’s Department of Children and Families was notified.
The department is now investigating the parents’ whereabouts.
Miguel Valdez, who owns a business nearby, said his security camera caught the accident.
The video shows an SUV hitting the child. The driver stopped and got out to help.
Neighbors told Channel 9 that the area where the crash happened lacks a crosswalk or signs that warn motorists to watch out for pedestrians.
“That’s very concerning because as a parent, you should know where your child is at all times,” said resident Louise Pack.
They said children often ride their bikes in the area without looking both ways before crossing. Neighbors also said that area has experienced an increase in traffic, including speeding motorists.
Monday’s collision knocked the boy off his bike. Officers haven’t said if the SUV driver will be cited.
No other details were given.
