Man shot by officer outside Cocoa Beach 7-Eleven

COCOA BEACH, Fla. — A man was shot by an officer outside of a 7-Eleven in Cocoa Beach on Wednesday, WFTV learned.

The shooting happened at about 3 p.m. on North A-1-A , just south of SR-520. A call came that the man was acting strangely and flipping off cars on A-1-A.

Officer Ron Betts, a six-year police veteran,  tried to use his Taser on the man to subdue him, but it malfunctioned. That's when the man charged at the officer and began punching him in the face, authorities said.

"At some point during the conversation, the subject attacked the officer, striking the officer. The officer attempted to subdue the subject. Unfortunately, a series of things did not work out and unfortunately the subject was shot twice," said Maj. Jay Harmon Cocoa Beach Police.

"He charged the officer, saying, 'You're going to die today and started beating on him,'" said Cocoa Beach resident Brenda Ringwald.

Officials reaffirmed that the officer only sustained minor injuries.

"The officer is safe. He appears to be OK. He suffered some minor [injuries], but appears to be OK," said Harmon.

He was transported to Cape Canaveral Hospital as a trauma alert, and was then flown to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

The man is expected to survive the shooting and Betts is on paid leave while FDLE investigates.
