Man charged in ex-girlfriend's kidnapping, fatal shooting denied bond

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County man who deputies say kidnapped and fatally shot his ex-girlfriend was denied bond Sunday afternoon.

David Payne, 62, was arrested Saturday afternoon after he was spotted in the dining area of the Sam’s Club on West Taft Vineland Road and South Orange Blossom Trail, said Orange County Capt. Angelo Nieves.

Someone who recognized Payne from news reports called the Sheriff’s Office, and deputies descended upon the store, arresting Payne as he exited, Nieves said.

Payne forced Jasmine Samuel, 25, into a car early Thursday as she was in the parking lot of Sonoco Products during her break at work, investigators said.

Samuel called 911 from the trunk of the car, saying she had been kidnapped.

Deputies found the car in the Taft area on 11th Avenue with Samuel's body in the trunk about 90 minutes later.

The couple broke up a week ago, a relative said.

Samuel had two children.

Payne is jailed on first-degree murder and armed kidnapping charges.
