ORLANDO, Fla. — A 23-year-old man was fatally shot early Sunday in the heart of downtown Orlando, less than an hour after last call, the Orlando Police Department said.

Richard Burgos was wounded by gunfire shortly before 2:45 a.m. on East Central Boulevard near North Orange Avenue, Orlando police Sgt. Wanda Miglio said.

Burgos was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Miglio said.

"Immediately after the shooting, two men fled the scene on foot and also fled from officers," Miglio said. "The men were located along West Pine Street, where they were identified as the two men involved in the shooting by witnesses and arrested on charges unrelated to the shooting."

The suspected gunmen weren't publicly identified, and no other details were given about the fatal shooting.

The incident comes just one week after someone fired a gun near The Beacham nightclub, forcing the hundreds of people inside to evacuate, which caused a chaotic scene along North Orange Avenue.

Police said the gunfire was heard at or near the club's entrance while hundreds of locals and visitors alike celebrated Florida Classic Weekend. No one was injured in the incident. %

It’s unknown whether the shooter intended to go inside, but the club’s owner, John San-Felipo, told Channel 9 he was confident that his new security system would have kept the gunman out.

San-Felipo said patrons must be patted down, scanned with a security wand and undergo an identification check using electronic scanners.

He said the evacuation was orderly, thanks to police and the evacuation plan his staff had recently rehearsed.

Police said they haven't found the person who fired the gun in that incident.

The shooting was news to Kirsten Koflowitch, who went downtown after being out of town for Thanksgiving.
“It's definitely a shock to hear that, because when I come down here I tend to feel safe,” she said. “It's definitely very alarming, especially for the younger crowd, because we don't think about [crime] as much.”
Chester Moore, a frequent patron at downtown bars, said he’s on high alert. %INLINE%
“It's kind of changed for the worse,” he said. “Because I feel like it could happen any day, any week.”
The city recently completed a nighttime entertainment study to learn more about how safety can be improved in downtown, but officials haven’t released the results of that study.
City leaders have plans to add more officers to patrol the area, but there's no timetable for when an additional unit would be created. %INLINE%
Typically, up to 95 Orlando police officers patrol the downtown area at night during weekends.
“I don't know that there's enough of them to really be everywhere at every moment to stop everything,” Koflowitch said. “They can only do so much.”
