Hurricane Maria: Central Floridians with ties to Puerto Rico fear for families' safety

Just days after a brush with Hurricane Irma, residents in Puerto Rico are now preparing for Hurricane Maria.
The powerful Category 5 storm is headed toward the island.
This may be the strongest storm to hit Puerto Rico since 1928 and the many Central Florida residents with ties to the island worry for family members who are still recovering from Hurricane Irma.
Two weeks ago, the island was spared what could've been a potentially devastating hit after Hurricane Irma ripped up the Carribean.

But Hurricane Maria is barreling toward the island with wind speeds of 160 miles an hour, catching the attention of Central Florida residents.
Osceola County resident Yoli Cintron, who weathered Irma in Puerto Rico, said her family members are doing what they can to prepare.
“They go to the supermarket and everybody is fighting for water,” she said. “They go to Lowe’s or any supermarket and it is a fight for everything.”
Her family in Puerto Rico sent her pictures showing sheets of plywood covering the windows of their home.
The surf is starting to pick up, while the military prepares to respond in the aftermath.
Cintron said families in Central Florida are worried about their loved ones’ safety.

"They are scared. Puerto Rico hasn't seen something like this since 1928," she said.

She said some people she knows on the island got electricity back a week after Irma and are now preparing again to be without.
