Halifax Health looks to hire more nurses during employee shortage

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Halifax Health, one of largest medical providers in Volusia County, is looking to hire more nurses.

Officials with Halifax Health say they are looking to add around 150 positions right now. That is double what they would normally need this time of year.

Kim Fulcher of Halifax’s Human Resources department says there are several reasons for the shortage — some people take traveling positions, some are staying home to care for family members, while others have chosen to pursue other careers.

Fulcher says Halifax is not alone in finding qualified personnel.

“Every health facility is dealing with that. They are trying to find agency nurses, critical care and specialty nurses to help with the COVID and the spike like we are seeing in Florida,” she said.

Fulcher says in addition to holding job fairs, the hospital is using other methods to recruit applicants.

Good hourly pay, bonuses and relocation help are all part of incentives being offered in an effort to find more nurses.

“We are offering for experienced nurses a $10,000 sign-on bonus and we will help with relocation,” Fulcher said.

Fulcher says the industry has always encountered a shortage of nurses, but the pandemic has only added to the growing need.
