Florida mom buying Slurpee when boy, 15, stole car with baby in back seat, deputies say

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with stealing a car with a baby in the back seat while his the mother was inside a South Florida 7-Eleven to buy a Slurpee, deputies said.

Devin Heath was working as part of a four-man team when he took the car on a 20-minute joyride from the Pompano Beach convenience store on July 25, the Broward County Sheriff's office said.

The child's mother says she had left her Toyota Camry running at the gas pump with her 1-year-old son inside while she went to buy a Slurpee at about 9:30 p.m.

Just before 10 p.m., deputies found the car abandoned in the middle of a dark roadway with the ignition still running and the baby still in the car seat.

Heath is facing charges of grand theft, larceny, burglary of a conveyance and abuse of a child, the sheriff's office said.

Authorities say additional arrests are expected.
