2 killed, 2 seriously injured in Volusia County head-on crash

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Two people were killed and two others were injured in a head-on crash that shut down the westbound lanes of International Speedway Boulevard in the thick of rush hour traffic Friday, officials said.

The crash happened near Brick Road between Daytona Beach and DeLand just before 5 p.m.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Samuel James, 20 was heading eastbound while Luis Pecunia, 26, was driving westbound on International Speedway Boulevard.

Troopers said James lost control, crossed over the median and into oncoming traffic in the westbound lanes.

He crashed head-on into Pecunia’s Toyota Corolla, killing a 43-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man who were passengers in Pecunia’s car, an FHP report said.

The victims were not identified.

James and Pecunia are in serious condition at Halifax Medical Center.

A third vehicle couldn’t stop in time and struck debris from the crash, but that driver is OK.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending, troopers said
