NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Beachgoers in Volusia County this weekend may end up sharing the sand with hundreds of trucks.
The organizers of Truck Lives Matter protest said they’re fighting against a proposed ban of lifted trucks on New Smyrna Beach.
Beach Patrol officials said they’re expecting as many as 3,000 trucks at the rally.
Cars, trucks and cans stretch as far as the eye can see along New Smyrna Beach.
It’s a unique site that draws visitors far and wide, who come to check out the vehicles and drive on the beach themselves.
Some worry it may not stay that way.
Brandon Riley is part of the Truck Lives Matter group.
Riley and others want to protest prior moved by the county to try and ban trucks from the beaches.
“Mostly the people that are offended by it are the snow birds and stuff,” said Riley.
Some parents don’t want the trucks on the beach for safety reasons. They said it’s tough for those drivers who are high up to see the small children who frequent the sandy shores.
Mothers like Paola Padovan said they’ll be staying away from the beaches this weekend.
“This is kind of crazy. I mean, it’s dangerous for little kids. It’s pollution, it’s gas,” said Padovan.
But others said as long as drivers pay attention, it shouldn’t be a problem.
“We are not going out spinning our tires or nothing like that, we are actually coming out here to have a good time,” said Andrew Bosse.
The rally starts at 1 p.m.
Beach Patrol said it will be out in full force.
