VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A storm caused damage to Volusia County Tuesday, and some trees fell on homes and blocked driveways.
JC Koren said he spent more than two decades working on his yard to make it perfect.
“When you come home and you have a bad day, and you come back here, there's nothing like it,” Koren said.
But his perfect yard took a hit this week when a storm rolled through and knocked one of his neighbor's trees onto Koren’s yard.
Charlie Wallace owner of Wallace Insurance who said even if a neighbor’s tree falls in a homeowner’s yard, that homeowner is responsible for any damage.
“It's your yard. You're responsible for it. (It’s) what they call an act of God,” said Wallace.
Wallace said the most important thing is to have a copy of the insurance policy and to document the property before a storm hits.
“The main thing you want to do is, prior to storms, is go through your house with a video camera and take pictures of everything,” said Wallace.
Wallace said that will help insurance adjusters evaluate claims.
Wallace said even if the tree is removed before the adjuster gets to the property, the photos still allow the homeowner to file a claim.
Wallace said filing that claim should not cause the homeowner’s insurance rates to increase.
