DeLand police make arrest in fatal hit-and-run of motorcyclist

DeLand motorcycle crash

DeLand police arrested a man Thursday they said hit and killed a motorcyclist and tried to flee the scene.

Police were called to the intersection of Flightline and Biscayne boulevards shortly after 4 p.m.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based on the evidence at the scene, police determined the motorcycle had collided with a silver vehicle.

Witnesses said the vehicle had heavy damage to its passenger side and had fled westbound on Old Daytona Road.

After canvassing the area, police found a silver four-door Mercedes and 40-year-old DeLand resident Douglas Fischer.

Fischer was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious injuries and taken to the Volusia County Jail where he is being held without bond.

The investigation is ongoing and deputies said Fischer could face more charges.
