Colonial High School principal finds way to eliminate band fees

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — For many students and their parents, high school band can be a burden because of all the fees involved with joining.

But this year, the principal at Colonial High School set out to make it completely free.

After seeing dozens of students drop out of band program because they couldn't afford it, school officials at Colonial High knew they had to find a way to fill the halls with music.

“The opportunity to reach all these students who never had an opportunity to do band is incredible,” said band director Jason Chapkin.

Principal Jose Martinez got creative with the budget to make it work without students having to do any fundraising.

"Making this a huge priority was something important for us," Martinez said.

He said it’s still a work in progress, but he is determined that the cost not fall on students.

“These are some of the most amazing kids we have here,” said Chapkin. “They haven't always had the same opportunities that some other kids (have) and now that they do, I'm really excited for them. It's incredible.”

Band membership was once about 65 students, but will soon pass 200.

“I have a sister in band, so it was double the amount and now that its free, it’s great because my parents don’t have to worry about paying double,” said band member Christy Carr.

The principal said he’s expanded the pilot program into the drama and dance departments.
