Colonial Drive to close at train tracks in Orlando over weekend

ORLANDO, Fla. — Getting in and out of downtown Orlando will get a little tricky starting Friday for drivers who use Colonial Drive.

Colonial Drive by the train tracks will close, and will stay closed through the weekend until Monday morning.

The weekend closure at Colonial Drive is one of two dozen the state plans to do over the next year in three counties.

Signs have been posted informing drivers about the closure.

Workers will make fixes to ease the bumpy drive over the train tracks.

Some drivers said they’re already frustrated with closures from the I-4 Ultimate Project.

TRAFFIC SECTION: Plan your route around the closure

“You get used to a certain route and then all of a sudden, I didn’t even know this was going to be shut down,” said driver Jamie Mills.

Drivers will have to take detours through Amelia Street, but the longer detour is for those getting off of Interstate 4.

It’ll take drivers a mile out of the way through Hughey Avenue, Amelia Street and Magnolia Drive.

The closure is one of 26 others the state Department of Transportation plans to make over the next year in Volusia, Seminole and Orange counties.

Two are planned this month.

In Longwood, Ronald Reagan Boulevard at State Road 434 will close the weekend of Oct. 21.

And in Winter Park, Pennsylvania Avenue at Webster Avenue closes Oct. 28-31.

As for Colonial Drive, drivers said they’ll just have to deal.

“It’s definitely going to be a little tricky,” said driver Kelly Larkin.

Once all the work is finished, the crossings will open Monday morning by 3 p.m.
