Brevard County commissioner looks to bring professional baseball back to Space Coast

The Washington Nationals recently left Florida’s Space Coast, but one Brevard County commissioner said he’s working on a plan to bring professional baseball back.
The National Amateur Sports Association has already committed to Space Coast Stadium, and commissioner Robin Fisher is working on a plan to bring another sports deal for North Brevard County.

Fisher’s plan would involve building a $25 million Minor League stadium and events center in Titusville.

“To me, it's more about an economic development project than it is just talking about baseball or softball or USSSA amateur sports because our whole downtown area needs to be revitalized,” Fisher said. “If you go there and look, you’ll see what I’m talking about. We think that this thing here can really make that happen.”

The proposed complex would be at Sand Point Park, and Fisher believes it would provide an economic stimulus for the entire area.

“To be honest with you, it seems like it would be (a) fantastic idea because the area is starting to grow,” resident Franz Stolar said.

Fisher said one minor league team and a professional softball team are already expressing interest in his proposal, which would be funded by team management, the tourist development tax and the North Brevard Economic Development Zone.

Fisher said he’s hoping the city of Titusville will assist with a new parking garage.

“Probably sometime in the month of June we'll start getting (something) on paper exactly the way this would work. Start taking it to the different boards that needs approval and ultimately take it to the county commission for approval,” Fisher said.
