ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A 16-year-old Apopka boy died Sunday morning when he was struck by a car while standing on a shoulder of Florida's Turnpike, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Sanjay Nandram was standing on the right shoulder of the Turnpike’s northbound lanes after he was involved in a crash with another motorist, FHP Sgt. Kim Montes said.
Nandram, who was standing on the passenger’s side of his vehicle, was struck shortly before 6:45 a.m. by a Nissan car driven by 32-year-old Tanya Garcia, troopers said.
Garcia told investigators that she had fallen asleep before the crash, Montes said.
Nandram died at the crash scene, and Garcia was taken to Ocoee’s Health Central Hospital with minor injuries.
Montes said Garcia could face charges.
No other details were given.
