Man in custody after 2 people shot at Titusville community center, police say

TITUSVILLE, Fla. — A man is in custody in connection with a shooting that happened near a park where children were playing, police said.

Stanley Fitzgerald Ghent II, 20, of Titusville was charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder and two counts of robbery with a firearm. authorities said.

The victims, a man and a woman, were taken via helicopter to a hospital with serious injuries.

The shooting happened Friday at about 5:30 p.m. in the parking area outside Isaac Campbell Park on 701 South Street. A police supervisor was in the area and heard the gunshots, police said.

Within 90 minutes, police were able to collect enough information from eyewitnesses to track down Ghent at a home about a half-mile from the shooting.

“It’s horrible that guns are coming into play so often today,” Titusville police Chief John Lau said. “It’s even worse when you’re doing it around the public, let alone children.”

Both victims knew the shooter, police said.

Witness Erik Jones said, “There was a young lady, slumped over in her car, another young man was running for cover saying call 911.”

Dwight Seigler, a Mims County resident, said it’s lucky no one else got hurt.

“People send their kids to the county park; they shouldn’t be worrying about whether they’re going to get shot by a stray bullet," Seigler said.
