MALABAR, Fla. — A gyrocopter crashed on a Brevard County runway Monday morning at Valkaria Airport, according to the sheriff's office.
The pilot was killed in the crash. He was identified as Scott Adair. No other details on Adair were released.
The gyrocopter is a two-seat aircraft, similar to a helicopter.
Authorities said Adair was the only person on board.
The crash happened at the airport on Greenbrooke Street in Malabar, and authorities said the gyrocopter ended up crashing into a small plane that was parked on the runway.
WFTV was told that Adair has a hanger at the airport and is well-known to local pilots.
"Apparently, he's been at this airport for quite some time. He's known to be very experienced paraglider, but has had instruction and received his license for this aircraft and I guess was out this morning to test his skills or fly the aircraft," said Brevard County spokesman Don Walker.
Witnesses said the the gyrocopter was about 100 off the ground when it appeared to encounter problems.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been contacted.
