Orlando mass shooter, Omar Mateen, worked at Department of Corrections

ORLANDO, Fla. — Eyewitness News reporter Christopher Heath confirmed that Orlando shooter Omar Mateen worked for the Florida Department of Corrections for six months.

In a statement from the Florida Department of Corrections, a spokesperson said, "Omar Mateen was employed at Martin Correctional Institution from Oct. 27, 2006 until April 27, 2007."

A source who was in Mateen's class at the DOC said he was still in the training sequence to be a corrections officer when he was removed from the program for bringing a weapon on to the Department of Corrections’ grounds.  However, the DOC has not confirmed that information.

The Florida Dept of Corrections said he was terminated for reasons “other than misconduct” but didn't specifically list the reason to ABC News.

A picture provided to Eyewitness News of the training class shows Mateen in the back row wearing a backward dark-colored hat.

The DOC has not said why Mateen was removed from the program.
